Spin or Drink Drinking Game: Rules, Bottle Setup & Variations

Spin or Drink Drinking Game: Rules, Bottle Setup & Variations

Spin or Drink is a spin-the-bottle-style drinking game where a bottle, phone spinner, or wheel chooses a player, and that player either completes a prompt or drinks.

The name is used loosely. Some groups play it as truth-or-drink. Some play dare-or-drink. Some play it as “spin the bottle, but nobody has to kiss anyone because we all grew up and developed boundaries.” Good. Better game.

There is no universal official version, so this guide separates the core mechanic from the common house-rule versions.

SPIN OR DRINK RULES — QUICK VERSION

  1. Players sit in a circle.
  2. Place a bottle, phone spinner, or wheel in the middle.
  3. The active player spins.
  4. Whoever the bottle points to gets a prompt.
  5. The selected player answers, completes the dare, or drinks.
  6. If they refuse, they drink the agreed penalty.
  7. Play passes clockwise or to the selected player.
  8. Stop whenever the group is done.

To play Spin or Drink: sit in a circle, spin a bottle or digital wheel, and give the selected player a truth, dare, question, or challenge. They complete it or drink, then the next turn starts.

What You Need to Play Spin or Drink

  • An empty bottle, phone spinner, or online wheel
  • 2 or more players
  • Drinks
  • Optional prompt cards or written questions

Best Number of Players

Spin or Drink works with 2 players, but it is better with 4 to 8. With two people, it becomes a partner question game. With a larger group, the spinner adds suspense without making anyone wait too long.

How to Set Up Spin or Drink

1. Pick the Spinner

A bottle on a table is the classic setup. A phone spinner works if you do not have a bottle or if the table is too sticky to rotate anything without consequences.

2. Choose the Prompt Type

Decide whether the game uses truths, dares, “most likely to” prompts, challenges, or a mix. Do this first. Otherwise every turn becomes someone improvising a question that sounds like a police interview.

3. Set Boundaries

For spicy or partner versions, set clear boundaries before playing. Anyone can pass and take the drink penalty. No arguing, no pressuring, no “come on, it’s just a game” nonsense.

How to Play the Spin or Drink Drinking Game

SPIN → SELECT PLAYER → PROMPT → DO IT OR DRINK

1. Spin the Bottle

The active player spins the bottle or wheel. The person it points to is selected for the turn.

2. Give a Prompt

The active player, a deck, or the group gives the selected player a prompt. Keep it clear enough that the selected player knows exactly what they are choosing.

3. Answer, Perform, or Drink

The selected player either completes the prompt or drinks the agreed penalty. One sip is usually enough. Full shots make a simple game dumb fast.

4. Continue Turns

Next turn can pass clockwise, to the selected player, or back to the spinner. Pick one method before starting.

Spin or Drink Versions

Version Rule Best For
Truth or Drink Answer honestly or drink. Small groups and close friends.
Dare or Drink Do the dare or drink. High-energy parties, with boundaries.
Partner Spin Two players answer partner-style prompts. Couples or close duos.
Group Vote Group votes whether the answer/dare counts. Groups that can be funny without becoming prosecutors.

Spin or Drink vs. Spin the Bottle

Spin or Drink uses the bottle as a selector, not as a forced kissing mechanic. That is the important difference. Classic Spin the Bottle usually points to romantic or kissing prompts. Spin or Drink works better as truth-or-drink, dare-or-drink, or challenge-or-drink.
