Ride the Bus Drinking Game: How to Play & Rules

Ride the Bus is a drinking card game built around four guessing rounds, a card pyramid, and one unlucky player getting stuck with the final challenge: riding the bus.

The game starts pretty harmlessly. Red or black? Higher or lower? Inside or outside? Guess the suit?

Then the pyramid starts handing out drinks, somebody gets stuck with more cards than everyone else, and suddenly they’re fighting for their life against a deck of playing cards.

There are several versions of Ride the Bus, especially when it comes to the final bus round. The rules below use the common four-question → pyramid → Ride the Bus format, with the major variations separated out so your group can pick one before playing.

RIDE THE BUS RULES — QUICK VERSION

  1. Choose a dealer and shuffle a standard 52-card deck.
  2. Each player receives 4 cards over four guessing rounds: Red or Black, Higher or Lower, Inside or Outside, and Guess the Suit.
  3. Wrong guesses mean drinks. Correct guesses can be safe or let you assign drinks, depending on your house rules.
  4. After everyone has 4 cards, build a 5-4-3-2-1 pyramid with the remaining deck.
  5. Flip pyramid cards from the bottom row upward.
  6. If you hold a card matching the flipped rank, play it and assign drinks based on the row.
  7. After the pyramid ends, the player with the most cards remaining rides the bus.
  8. To get off the bus, that player must complete the final card challenge without screwing up.

What You Need to Play Ride the Bus

  • 1 standard 52-card deck
  • 3 or more players
  • 1 dealer — the dealer can also play
  • A table or flat surface
  • Drinks if you’re using the drinking rules

Ride the Bus works especially well with 4–8 players.

You can play with fewer people, but the pyramid gets much better once enough people are holding cards and trying to unload them onto each other.

How to Set Up Ride the Bus

Choose one player to act as the dealer and shuffle the deck.

Everyone else sits or stands around the table.

The game has three main phases:

  1. The Four Questions — players build a four-card hand.
  2. The Pyramid — players try to get rid of those cards.
  3. Ride the Bus — the player with the worst remaining hand gets the final challenge.

Keep the cards each player receives during the first phase. You’ll need them for the pyramid.


How to Play Ride the Bus

4 QUESTIONS → PYRAMID → LOSER RIDES THE BUS

Round 1: Red or Black?

The dealer starts with the player to their left.

Before receiving a card, the player guesses:

Red or black?

  • Red: Hearts or Diamonds
  • Black: Clubs or Spades

The dealer flips the card and gives it to the player.

If the guess is wrong, the player takes 1 drink.

If it’s correct, they’re safe.

Continue around the table until everyone has their first card.


Round 2: Higher or Lower?

Each player now guesses whether their second card will be higher or lower than their first.

For example, if your first card is a 6:

  • Guess higher and draw a Queen? Correct.
  • Guess lower and draw a 3? Correct.
  • Guess higher and draw a 4? Wrong.

A matching rank is usually treated as a loss unless your group establishes another rule beforehand.

Wrong guess = 2 drinks.

Then keep the second card.


Round 3: Inside or Outside?

Now use your first two cards to create a range.

Before receiving card three, guess whether it will fall:

  • Inside: Between the values of your first two cards
  • Outside: Higher than both or lower than both

Example:

If your first cards are a 4 and a 10, then 5 through 9 are inside. A 2, 3, Jack, Queen, King, or Ace would be outside, depending on how your table ranks Ace.

If the third card exactly matches one of your boundary cards, it’s commonly treated as wrong.

Wrong guess = 3 drinks.

This is usually the first round where everyone realizes they were much more confident about probability than they should have been.


Round 4: Guess the Suit

The final guessing round is straightforward:

Guess the exact suit of your fourth card.

  • Hearts
  • Diamonds
  • Clubs
  • Spades

You’ve got a one-in-four shot if you’re guessing blindly.

Wrong guess = 4 drinks.

After everyone completes this round, each player should have 4 cards.


Ride the Bus Card Rankings

Before playing Higher or Lower or Inside or Outside, establish how you’re treating Aces.

A simple ranking is:

LOWEST TO HIGHEST

2 → 3 → 4 → 5 → 6 → 7 → 8 → 9 → 10 → J → Q → K → A

Some versions treat Ace as low instead.

There is no reason to have this argument after somebody already guessed Higher. Pick your Ace rule first.


How the Ride the Bus Pyramid Works

Once everyone has their four cards, use the remaining deck to build a 15-card pyramid.

Lay the cards face down in five rows:

Bottom row: 5 cards

Second row: 4 cards

Third row: 3 cards

Fourth row: 2 cards

Top row: 1 card

Start at the bottom-left card and flip the pyramid one card at a time.

Matching Pyramid Cards

If the flipped pyramid card matches the rank of a card in your hand, you can play that card onto the pyramid.

For example:

The dealer flips a Queen. If you’re holding a Queen, you can get rid of it.

The higher you climb in the pyramid, the more that card is worth.

PYRAMID DRINK VALUES

  • Bottom row: Assign 1 drink
  • Second row: Assign 2 drinks
  • Third row: Assign 3 drinks
  • Fourth row: Assign 4 drinks
  • Top card: Assign 5 drinks

You can usually assign all the drinks to one player or split them among multiple people.

If you hold multiple cards of the same rank, many versions let you play more than one when that rank appears.

Once you play a card into the pyramid, it’s gone from your hand.


Who Has to Ride the Bus?

After every pyramid card has been flipped, count how many cards each player still has.

The player with the most cards remaining rides the bus.

If two or more players tie, use a predetermined tiebreaker.

A common method is comparing the highest card remaining in each tied player’s hand. Whoever has the higher card gets stuck riding.

You can also just draw a card to break the tie.

The important part is deciding before the tie happens, because the person facing the bus suddenly becomes very interested in procedural fairness.


How to Ride the Bus

This is the part of the game with the most variation.

One of the simplest versions sends the losing player back through the same four questions from the beginning:

  1. Red or Black?
  2. Higher or Lower?
  3. Inside or Outside?
  4. Guess the Suit.

The rider must answer all four correctly in a row.

Get one wrong and:

  1. Take the agreed drink.
  2. Discard the cards from that attempt.
  3. Start over from Red or Black.

The player gets off the bus only after completing all four stages without a wrong guess.

Sounds manageable.

Until you’ve correctly guessed the first three questions twice and then guessed Clubs like an idiot both times.


Ride the Bus Variations

Ride the Bus has several widely played versions, especially for the final bus phase.

None of these need to be combined. Pick one bus format unless your goal is to make the game last until sunrise.

Higher-or-Lower Bus

Instead of repeating the four questions, deal a row of 5–8 face-down cards.

Flip the first card.

Before each additional card is revealed, the rider guesses whether it will be higher or lower than the previous card.

  • Correct: Move to the next card.
  • Wrong: Take a drink and restart the bus.

The rider wins only after making it through the entire row.


Face Card Bus

Another version creates a row of face-down cards that the rider reveals one by one.

Number cards are safe.

Face cards and Aces trigger penalties and can send the rider back to the beginning.

A common penalty system is:

  • Jack: 1 drink
  • Queen: 2 drinks
  • King: 3 drinks
  • Ace: 4 drinks

This version is mostly luck instead of guessing.

It can also drag on forever if the deck decides it hates one specific person.


Give or Take in the Four Questions

Instead of simply being safe after a correct guess:

  • Correct guess: Assign drinks to another player.
  • Wrong guess: Take the drinks yourself.

The number of drinks usually matches the round:

  • Red or Black = 1
  • Higher or Lower = 2
  • Inside or Outside = 3
  • Suit = 4

This makes the opening phase much more interactive.


Pyramid Bluffing

Some versions let players claim they have a matching pyramid card without immediately showing it.

The targeted player can either accept the drinks or call bullshit.

  • If the player was bluffing, the bluffer drinks the penalty.
  • If the player really had the card, the challenger gets a larger penalty.

This turns the pyramid into a bluffing game instead of just matching card ranks.

Good variation if your group likes lying directly to each other.

It’s easy to explain, easy to keep track of, and still sufficiently terrible for whoever ends up riding.


How Many People Can Play Ride the Bus?

You can play Ride the Bus with 3 or more people, but roughly 4–8 players works best.

More players make the pyramid more interesting because there are more matching cards floating around.

If the group gets too large, a single deck may not leave enough cards for both everyone’s four-card hands and the 15-card pyramid.

At that point, either add a second deck or pick a game designed for a bigger crowd.

Yes.

The game itself is entirely card-based. Replace drinks with points, tokens, non-alcoholic drinks, or another penalty and the guessing, pyramid, and bus mechanics work exactly the same.


Ride the Bus in One Sentence

Guess four cards, unload your hand through the pyramid, and pray somebody else has more cards left when it’s time to ride the bus.

The first half is probability.
